The Earth is constantly bombarded by cosmic rays. The primary cosmic rays
interact with the atmosphere, creating showers of secondary particles. Some
particles are stopped in the atmosphere but others penetrate to altitudes
used for human activities (0 - 10 km).
These particles may cause electronics to malfunction, particularly in space
and at aircraft altitudes, but also in terrestrial environments. For example,
if a particle hits the active volume of a memory cell, its state can change
from 0 to 1, or vice versa.
